Homework due Wednesday 1/25/12: Using your “Convincing Opposition” handout and “Ethos, Pathos, Logos,” add in more audience awareness and audience appeal into your persuasive essay. Get your reader to feel with you by feeling with them! Highlight the audience awareness sentences that you add into your draft for tomorrow.

Homework due Thursday 1/19/12: 1.) Type transitions into each of your body paragraphs. Remember that you need them to introduce a new idea/reason (beginning of a paragraph), when moving from detail to commentary or detail to new detail, and when wrapping up your paragraph (end of paragraph). Avoid “stock” transitions whenever possible and use the list of good transitions from class today. 2.) Read your indie book for 20 minutes or more!

Make sure that each reason is different (you don’t want your reasons to overlap and sound redundant). Homework due Friday 1/6/12: For those of you who were able to commit to an essay topic today, continue to freewrite about it in your WNB. Write down anything you know or care about this topic. Don’t worry about format, organization, or fluency. For those of you who didn’t decide on a topic yet, review your notes from class today after conferring with your partner and make a decision tonight. Start freewriting about this topic in your WNB. Be ready to confer with me tomorrow about your decision.

There is no English homework for the remainder of this week or during Christmas break. Enjoy this time with family and friends. Read a good book, rest, and recharge for the new year! You’ve all made so much progress as readers, writers, and thinkers so far. I’m looking forward to seeing your continued growth in the coming months.

HOMEWORK DUE TUESDAY 12/20: Polish your poem and print out your final copy. Attach with all drafts (except the one in your notebook. Don’t tear out anything in your notebook) and your rubric. Print out a new copy of the rubric if you used one to self-assess your draft. Periods 2, 4, 5: email a copy of your poem to jpolise@darienps.org so that Mr. Polise this afternoon so that he can prepare some musical accompaniment for our poetry jam tomorrow. Feel free to play the part by wearing all black and sunglasses.

Choose one poem from your WNB that you will revise, edit, and polish for our poetry jam next week. When choosing, consider the poem that means the most to you, contains the strongest feelings and emotions, and/or that you think you will have the most fun revising, editing, and sharing.
HOMEWORK DUE TUESDAY 12/13: Finish writing your place poem in your WNB if you did not finish in class. Remember to use strong thoughts and feelings, as well as sensory detail and figurative language, to show your reader the meaning and feeling that this particular place holds in your heart.

HOMEWORK DUE WEDNESDAY 12/7: Read “Harlem” by Langston Hughes (poem on yellow handout) using the “EVOKER” method for reading poetry that we learned today in class. You may write any notes directly on the poem handout.
HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY 12/2: Final copy of your book taste. Read the reminders below:
1.) Have a paper copy printed BEFORE class.
2.) Beneathe your final copy, please include your draft, your editing checklist, the rubric you used to revise with, AND a clean copy of the rubric (Rubrics can be uploaded under “Assignments and Rubrics”). Staple all of these pieces together.
3.) Bring a flash drive with your book taste on it so that we can upload it onto the “K” drive for Miss Ryan during class.
4.) All classes will meet in a computer lab tomorrow. Bring all English materials directly to your assigned room. Periods 2, 4, 5 will meet in Lab 230 and Period 8 will meet in the Library at the computer station.

Choose one book from your log (not a summer read) that you thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend that other seventh graders read. Bring this book to class on Monday 11/28.

HOMEWORK DUE TUESDAY 11/22: Final copies of short stories due!! Remember to include editing checklist, all rough drafts, brainstorming sheet, and rubric. Remember that the font is Times New Roman 12 and spacing is 1.5 lines. Full, on time credit means having all of your work stapled BEFORE coming to class – NOT at the beginning or during class. HOMEWORK DUE MONDAY 11/21: Carefully review the short story rubric as you revise your story this weekend. Bring your revisions typed in your story for class Monday. (Monday we will edit and peer edit). Remember that your font should be Times New Roman size 12 and your spacing between lines should be 1.5. Your story should not drastically exceed 5 pages. If it does, you will need to spend time condenscing this weekend!

HOMEWORK DUE MONDAY 11/14: Continue working on drafting your short story. If you haven’t typed it up yet, please type your draft this weekend. Make sure that you have a clear “so what” in your story. By this weekend you should at least have through your climax drafted.

HOMEWORK DUE THURSDAY 11/3: In your WNB, brainstorm 3-5 possible conflicts that you envision the character in your short story facing. REMEMBER: The conflict you end up choosing develop in your story must be resolved in a SHORT STORY NOT A BOOK ! Heads up –> Quiz Friday on short story elements. Start reviewing your flashcards!
When brainstorming conflicts, consider: 1.) What problems might this character face that are based on his/her weaknesses or flaws (internal)? 2.) What problems might this character face due to the environment or setting he/she lives in (external)? 3.) What problems might this character face due to his/her relationship with another character (external)?
HOMEWORK DUE WEDNESDAY 11/2: Make flashcards for the 20 key elements of short stories (see yellow handout; additional copies are under “Class Notes”). On your flashcards include 1) the name of the element, 2) definition, 3) an example (hint/tip: use examples from your Joan Bauer novel since they will be fresh in your mind). HEADS UP –> Quiz on all 20 elements of short stories on Friday, 11/4!
HOMEWORK DUE MONDAY 10/31: Prepare textual evidence and food for Joan Bauer Celebration!!! Remember: 1.) YOU MUST HAVE TEXTUAL EVIDENCE TYPED AND PROPERLY CITED FOR YOUR FOOD ITEM!! THIS IS YOUR TICKET TO THE PARTY. Example: “I nuked a slab of herb bread and a container of Mom’s drop-dead Chicken Paprikash” (Thwonk 93). 2.) Type your evidence BIG! It’s going to be part of our class display. 3.) You can drop off your food to room 268 on Monday morning before school. We do have some (limited) freezer space and a microwave if necessary.

PERIOD 2 ONLY: Tomorrow I will not be seeing you since we have a special assembly. Therefore, if you did not finish brainstorming symbols in your WNB tonight and then expand on one symbol in a new entry (see directions for this above).
DUE MONDAY, 9/26: 1) Read for at least 20 minutes this weekend and post-it (remember this is practice to get you ready for book clubs!) 2) Write in your WNB about a topic of your choice for at least 20 minutes. (Tip: Set a timer and keep your pen/pencil moving the entire time! Some of you will be surprised at what you can accomplish on paper in only 20 minutes!) Looking ahead: I will be collecting your WNB next Wednesday for a grade! You’ll get a rubric Monday, but in the mean time, make sure all of your entries have titles, dates, and are organized.
DUE FRIDAY, 9/23: Using what we learned today about how to make connections, make ONE solid connection (it can be T-S, T-T, OR T-W you choose). In your WNB, identify and fully explain the connection you made. Be sure to use specific details from the text to support your ideas!
DUE THURSDAY, 9/22: In your WNB, write a paragraph explaining the universal theme or message in your current independent reading book. Make sure to back it up with specific details from the text! If you just began a new book and aren’t far enough in yet to determine the universal theme/message, you may write about the last book that you finished. Remember though that you will need to be specific. This means going back into the text!!
DUE WEDNESDAY, 9/21: (1) Finish reading and post-iting “Hardware” if you did not do so in class. (2) Read your independent reading book for 20-30 minutes tonight and post-it. Aim for using at least 3/5 of the types of post-its we learned today in class.
DUE TUESDAY, 9/20: Read for at least 30 minutes and make sure your book log is up-to-date! Bring this same independent reading book to class everyday this week. Please have post-it notes with you in class beginning tomorrow.
DUE MONDAY, 9/19: (1) “No Excuse Words” Quiz on Monday. Study the words on the list! You should know how to use them in sentences and spell them. (2) Read for at least 30 minutes and make sure your book log is up-to-date!!
DUE FRIDAY, 9/16: Print out 2 copies of your final typed book hook. 1 will be for me to grade and 1 will be for your classmates to read tomorrow. With the 1 that you are handing in to me please attach all of the following in this exact order stapled together in the upper left hand corner:
VERY TOP – Typed final copy book hook
-Blue editing checklist
-Typed rough draft with revisions and editions written all over it
-Handwritten rough draft
(Heads up: Quiz Monday 9/19 on “No Excuse” words. Begin studying the list!)
DUE THURSDAY, 9/15: Finish editing your typed draft using the editing checklist you received today in class. Save all drafts and your checklist. I will collect all of these pieces on Friday with your final copy. Bring your typed draft to class tomorrow with your flash drive! (Heads up: Monday, 9/19 you will have a quiz on the “No Excuse Words List” you received today. Study these words and know how to use them correctly in your writing!)
DUE WEDNESDAY, 9/14: Finish typing your draft for your book hook if you did not finish this in the computer lab today.
DUE TUESDAY, 9/13: Finish first rough draft of your book hook if you did not do so in class. Tomorrow we will be typing our drafts. Bring a flash drive with you! PLEASE NOTE: PERIODS 2 and 4 will meet in the library at the computers. PERIOD 5 will meet in the computer lab in room 330. PERIOD 8 will meet in the computer lab in room 230. Bring all English supplies.
DUE MONDAY, 9/12: Complete “Determining My Book Hook Audience” writer’s notebook response. Remember to be thoughtful, detailed, and precise. This entry will help you when we begin our drafts on Monday.
DUE FRIDAY, 9/9: Decide on the book that you read this summer that you will write a book hook for. You do not need to start writing your hook yet. Meet in the library tomorrow with ALL English supplies!
DUE THURSDAY, 9: 8: Carefully read the directions for the book hook assignment, your first independent reading assignment for quarter 1. Highlight key words and phrases on it. Meet in the library tomorrow with ALL English supplies!
DUE WEDNESDAY, 9/7: 3 completed summer reading book forms and finish your heart map in your writer’s notebook
DUE TUESDAY, 9/6: All supplies
DUE FRIDAY, 9/2: Read English Course Expectations and underline key phrases. Jot down any questions that you have in the margins.
